Everlane: New concept of luxury e-tailing

December 11, 2012

I am obsessed with San Francisco-based Everlane.  By cutting out the middleman, the budding luxury clothing design and manufacturing company offers high-quality products at unconventional prices.  The company started by producing a luxurious version of the classic t-shirt for just $15.  It has now evolved its product offerings to silk blouses, wool scarves and backpacks to name a few.  How does Everlane achieve such prices?  See the value chain below:

By cutting out the middlemen and overhead prices incurred by brick-and-mortar stores, Everlane is able to offer the lowest prices to consumers.  Why not not-splurge and try out Everlane for yourself.  My guess is you will be very pleasantly surprised.

Winter Wonderland

December 7, 2012

Winter Wonderland: A great holiday festivity I highly recommend if you are in London or planning a visit. Amusement park meets carnival, the ultimate playground for children or adults who just want to feed their inner-child.  A childhood favorite, I love carousels!  What is your favorite childhood activity?

Classic white shirting

December 1, 2012

(Equipment shirt, rag & bone shorts, Barneys New York CO-OP boots, Ray-Ban sunglasses)

There is nothing easier to wear than the classic white shirt.  We all have this piece in our closets (or definitely a male in your household does)!  But even though we all own or have easy access to the classic white shirt,  I for one sometimes forget it is in my closet.  Maybe this is because it is such a simple staple piece I take it for granted.  My style tip: Just go oversized and your done!  So throw on your white shirt (or grab your brother, husband, boyfriend, guy friend or whomever's) over really whatever for a clean, sharp look.

The Curator, Tastemaker, Style Influencer ...

November 27, 2012

The curator, tastemaker, style influencer, fashion ambassador and celebrity.  Call them as you like as they are changing the scene of online shopping.  There are so many new ways to shop nowadays with new online fashion shopping sites emerging left and right. Exciting as it is, I see one consistent trend: the use of curators (or insert any of the above titles) in recommending products. Marketing research has shown that we as consumers like recommendations from people we know and/or admire and are more inclined to shop these suggestions.  So is the curator the new online marketing strategy of today as was the flash-sale of previous years?  I'll let you be the judge by presenting below four unique online websites that have adopted the curator-based business model.

AHAlife is an online discovery and shopping platform that offers unique handpicked products by the likes of Donna Karan, Daniel Boulud, Tina Brown and Tim Gunn.  Definitely some heavy hitters here!

The Coveteur offers a look into the closets of tastemakers, celebrities and fashion elite with the ability to actually shop pieces from their closets.  Right now Sophia Bush and Hugh Hefner are amongst the closets you can peruse and purchase.

Vaunte recently launched and is also offering up fashionable closets by redesigning the world of online luxury consignment shopping. It is currently by-invitation only with some of its members including fashion designer Lela Rose and fashion stylist Ann Caruso.

The Cools is a social network and an e-commerce site.  In addition to hosting brands, boutiques, bloggers (hint!) and individuals, its tastemakers include Erin Fetherston, Vladimir Restoin Roitfeld, Agyness Deyn and the granddaughters of skin-care legend Jacques Courtin-Clarins.

(rag & bone sweater, jeans and headband, Barneys New York CO-OP boots, Theory gloves, Ray-Ban sunglasses)

First off, I would like to clarify that I am NOT a matchy-matchy girl.  I actually really discourage it in styling.  I love mixing different prints and fabrics.  But, in this case, it kind of really looks good!  Rag & Bone's matching sweater and headband were never pieces I bought to wear together intentionally.  I just really liked the pattern and it is so uncommon of me to purchase two items with the same design.  So glad I went beyond my comfort zone and did!

Talk from me

What is your favorite restaurant in London?
London has all the major restaurants like Nobu, Zuma and Hakkasan.  While these are good my favorite is actually a small, rustic French restaurant in Pimlico called La Poule au Pot.  The food is great and the ambiance is even better - so warm and cozy!

Your hair looks so long and healthy.  What is your secret?
Aw, thanks! Trust me it wasn't always this healthy and I tend to color my hair a lot.  I actually have curly hair and used to straighten it everyday.  But nowadays I try to not touch my hair with any hot tools every other day.  This in combination with a really good shampoo and conditioner (I use Fresh products) and a bit of Argan oil on the ends has shown a huge difference.

Talk from you

"Yesterday I bundled up the little cookie and headed into Covent Garden to Dust PR's press day where the lovely ladies were showing the SS13 collections for some of my favourite brands – WildfoxRebecca Minkoff (accessories), BarbourFalke and Irregular Choice (shoes)." - STYLONYLON

"I'm so excited to see the family and have some amazing food (especially pie!) this Thursday for Thanksgiving. For this special occasion I have purposely put together this outfit. I found this shirt in my sister's closet, loved it, and just had to wear it!  The deeper colors of this floral top make it an easy transition into Fall." - The Urban Lioness

If you would like to be a blog I feature or ask me a question, please see here for what I am looking to feature and email with the subject line "Talk the Talk." Looking forward to hearing from you and sharing your "talk" in the next post.  Happy Thanksgiving!

Fall leaves

November 21, 2012

What better way to enjoy the auburn leaves of Fall than in a gorgeous gown and carrying an intriguingly elegant yet modern handbag? Um...many ways!  Dreamlike yes, practical no.  I was so excited about shooting my Theyskens' Theory gown and favorite handbag from M2Malletier, I didn't realize how difficult walking through leaves would be!  But I succeeded in giving you my vision and really, that is all I wanted with two pieces so distinct they deserve the fantasy.

Designer Spotlight: Lady Grey

November 19, 2012

New York-based Lady Grey is one if not my favorite upcoming jewelry line.  And I swear I am not biased by having met the line's ultra-sweet designer and co-founder Jill Martinelli.  The jewelry speaks for itself.  I find fascinating the balance between hardness and femininity in each piece.  This duality in design is probably due to the fact that Jill and her design partner/co-founder Sabine Le Guyader both have degrees in metalworking.  How cool is that!  Above are my favorite pieces from their Darklands FW'12 collection available at Elizabeth Charles and Lady Grey online

I sat down with Jill to discuss Lady Grey as well as her style inspirations and learnings as a designer.

Tell me about the line Lady Grey.
The line is named after Lady Jane Grey with whom we found inspiration from her doomed story as the short-lived Queen of England from July 10-19, 1553 ("The Nine Days' Queen"). After graduating from school, Sabine and I decided to create a line together that combined a fashion-forward approach to jewelry with our conceptual ideas about adornment.

Who are your style icons?
Crystal Gayle and Lizzy Mercier Descloux.

What skill do you believe is necessary for success as a designer?
Perfectionism, but let yourself get a little weird once in a while.  Don't take yourself too seriously.

Living a girl's dream

November 16, 2012

(Emilio de la Morena dress and belt, Rag & Bone long sleeve tee, Christian Louboutin heels, Tom Ford sunglasses)

Last week when I visited London Fashion Week designer Emilio de la Morena's design studio to get a real-life glimpse of his SS'13 collection (see post here), I also got a hold of this FW'12 dress.  A beautiful exotic digital print I can only describe as destructured flowers meets leopard.  It is so refreshing for Fall/Winter.  Emilio is known for making women feel feminine and pretty and this dress made me feel just that with the little peplum detail and flouncy skirt.  So easy to wear, I loved shooting it in a beautiful garden in London and living every little or big girl's dream.
